What You Need To Know
01
What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a method used for hair removal. A skilled electrologist inserts a fine wire into the hair follicle beneath the skin’s surface. An electric current is then delivered through the wire to the base of the follicle, effectively destroying the hair root. This damage to the follicle stops future hair growth and causes the current hair to shed.
03
Why do I need so many electrolysis treatments?
Hairs have different growth cycles. Your hair follicle produces hair and discards it through shedding. This hair production cycle is a process of growth, rest and replacement. Individual hairs are in different phases of this cycle. More than one treatment catches the hairs at the right point in the cycle to destroy them.
05
Are there any risks or complications of electrolysis?
Electrolysis is very safe. Very slight risks of infection (from an unsterile needle) or scarring exist if the electrolysis is not done correctly. These risks are very low if you choose a certified, professional electrolysis practice.
You may have a slight reddening of the skin during or right after treatment. It’s very short-lived. People with darker skin may have temporary dark spots on their skin. The spots fade over time, so don’t use bleaching cream on them. It is important to never pick the scabs that form later, though scabbing is normal, removing them prematurely can cause scars and increase chances of infection.
02
How many electrolysis treatments will I need?
You'll need multiple sessions, usually weekly or biweekly, possibly over a year or more. The total number depends on factors like hair type, growth, and the area being treated—larger or coarser-haired areas require more treatments.
04
How long is one session?
Based on your needs, a single session can last anywhere between 15 minutes to multiple hours.
06
Pre-Treatment Prep:
Hair needs to be long enough to be able to be grabbed by tweezers for the process of electrolysis. A slight tingling or pinching sensation should be expected during the treatment process. You can discuss pain management options with your electrologist. Ensure sufficient hydration and make sure to keep your skin moisturized for easy and painless sessions.

Post Treatment Advice:

Slight redness and swelling are common after an electrolysis treatment. This goes away in a few hours. However, it is advisable to avoid activities that may irritate the skin for 24 hours post treatment including applying skincare actives, sun exposure, anything that causes sweating, or clogs pores like make up. Your electrologist will suggest any ointments or creams if required.
